Rolex watches are a symbol of luxury and craftsmanship, making them a popular target for counterfeiters. While we do not accept watches at our store, we believe in empowering our customers with the knowledge to protect themselves. If you're in the market for a pre-owned Rolex, it's essential to know how to spot a fake. Here are some key things to look for to ensure you're getting the real deal.
1. The Cyclops Lens
One of the most telling signs of a genuine Rolex is the Cyclops lens over the date. On a real Rolex, the lens is convex and magnifies the date 2.5 times, making it easy to read. Fakes often have a flat lens with little to no magnification.
2. The Weight
Rolex watches are made from high-quality materials, giving them a substantial feel. If the watch feels light or flimsy, it's likely a fake. Genuine Rolexes are crafted from a solid block of 904L stainless steel, which is heavier than the cheaper materials used in counterfeits.
3. The Case Back
With the exception of a few rare models, Rolex watches have a smooth, polished case back. If you see a watch with a clear, glass case back that shows the inner workings, it's almost certainly a fake. Counterfeiters often use this to distract from other imperfections.
4. The Movement
Rolex movements sweep smoothly (about 8 ticks per second), not a jerky tick.
High-quality fakes sometimes mimic this, so if possible, open the case or have a jeweler check the movement. Genuine Rolex movements are engraved and beautifully finished.
5. The Serial & Model Numbers
Engraved between the lugs at 6 and 12 o’clock. On genuine watches, the engraving is very fine and crisp; on fakes, it’s often shallow or sloppy.
Modern Rolexes (post-2005) have micro-etched crowns on the crystal at 6 o’clock — hard to see without magnification.
6. The Crown Logo & Etching
The winding crown has Rolex’s coronet logo, precisely engraved and easy to feel.
Counterfeits sometimes get the shape or proportions wrong.
7. Bracelet & Clasp
A real Rolex bracelet feels smooth, with tight links and no rattling.
Clasps should close firmly, with detailed engraving inside.
8. Lume (Glow-in-the-Dark Markers)
Genuine Rolex lume (Chromalight or Super-LumiNova) glows bright and long.
Many fakes use weak or uneven lume.
9. Documentation & Box
Genuine Rolexes come with papers, warranty cards, and high-quality packaging.
Counterfeit boxes/papers are often poorly printed.
